Things you can do

Protect our Plants and Animals

Did you know that we need flies to pollinate our food and that 3 out of 4 endangered species are plants?

Actions you can do right away

  • Put down the fly spray, instead cover any food with a cloth, use flyscreens and take the rubbish out regularly

  • Make a natural bug repellant by planting basil, mint or lavender and sit back and enjoy the aroma!

  • Talk to your family about not using chemicals in the garden and check out these recipes from Gardening Australia

Actions that take some planning

  • Plant carnivorous plants like pitcher plants and venus flytraps in the garden

  • Build a frog pond, worm farm or bee hotel and plant flowers so the bees can forage

  • Pledge with your family not to let your dogs and cats out at night

Community Action

National Tree Day

This July be part of Australia's largest tree planting and nature care event. Join the community to help plant one million native trees on National Tree Day organised by Planet Ark.

Whilst every day can be Tree Day, this year Schools Tree Day is Friday 26 July and National Tree Day is Sunday 28 July. To JOIN a planting on Tree Day go to the Planet Ark page to and enter your postal code below to see what's happening in your area.

You can HOST your own planting by signing up to Planet Ark and receiving guidance and a toolkit so you can organise your own Tree Day event. And if you want to host a SCHOOL planting for Tree Day visit the Schools page on Planet Ark.

In addition to Tree Day there are lots of other fantastic community events that help boost biodiversity and support our local plants and animals. Check out this list of events at Conservation Volunteers Australia that include replanting wetlands, urban tree forests and koala habitats. Plus they have an awesome app called Nature Blocks that helps you increase your biodiversity at home!
